iOS 26.5 Beta 2 Released with Limited New Features

Apple's second beta of iOS 26.5 brings modest updates including new subscription options and RCS encryption, but notably lacks anticipated Siri improvements expected in fall's OS 27.

iOS 26.5 Beta 2 Released with Limited New Features

Apple has released the second beta of iOS 26.5, along with updates to iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, and other operating systems. However, the latest release appears to be light on significant new features, disappointing users hoping for major improvements to Siri and other core functionality.

The 26.4 updates previously delivered numerous improvements across Apple's various operating systems and included applications. However, they failed to deliver the long-awaited enhancements to Siri that many users have been anticipating. These expected improvements include a new foundation model, on-screen awareness, personal context understanding, and cross-app actions. Recent rumors suggest that these features are unlikely to arrive before the major OS 27 updates scheduled for fall, when Apple plans to introduce even more substantial Apple Intelligence upgrades.

While there was some hope that certain Siri improvements might be included in iOS 26.5, the beta release contains no Siri changes whatsoever. Users will likely need to wait until WWDC in June for any announcements regarding when Siri enhancements might become available.

What's New in iOS 26.5

Despite the lack of Siri improvements, iOS 26.5 beta 2 does include several noteworthy additions. App developers now have expanded subscription options through Apple's in-app purchase system, with the ability to offer monthly billing combined with a 12-month commitment option. This provides developers with greater flexibility in structuring their subscription offerings.

Maps continues to receive attention, with Apple adding Suggested Places functionality alongside preparation for ads coming later this summer. The Suggested Places feature will eventually include paid placement options for businesses.

Additionally, Apple has once again enabled end-to-end encryption for messages exchanged with Android users through RCS. However, it remains unclear whether this encryption feature will make it into the final release version.

How to Install iOS 26.5 Beta

For non-developers interested in testing iOS 26 beta releases, the installation process is straightforward. Users should register for the beta program through Settings, and the beta option should appear in Software Update shortly after registration is confirmed. Note that it may take a few moments for the option to become available after initial registration.

Registered Apple developers can access the developer beta through the Apple Developer app, available in iOS. A free developer account is sufficient for this access. Developers can obtain an account through Xcode or the Apple Developer app on their iOS devices.
